This gorgeous young lady battled with bulimia in her teens and twenties. The acid damage caused her front teeth to thin, chip, and shorten. Years ago, she had veneers placed on her two front teeth (the dentist shaved those teeth down to place two porcelain veneers). She came to me in a panic when one broke.
I replaced those veneers and used no prep veneers on her other teeth to repair the acid damage and improve her smile. She successfully beat bulimia and her confidence shows in her gorgeous smile.

Children who were treated with tetracycline antibiotics often had their adult teeth affected so that they appear dark gray. Professional whitening may do a little to improve the color, however these patients find it nearly impossible to whiten away the gray color.
If you grind into these teeth, the color gets even darker and that creates an even bigger esthetic challenge for the cosmetic dentist. The darker the color you’re trying to mask, the more opaque layers you have to build into the porcelain. The result can be overly white opaque teeth that now look silly and fake.
With cases like this, I use no-prep porcelain veneers to cover the dark teeth. I work with a highly-skilled master ceramist to get a bright result that still looks like natural teeth.

If you were given tetracycline as a young child, it may have caused your teeth to be dark gray in color. Professional whitening does little to help these cases. Any experienced cosmetic dentist knows these cases are some of the more challenging cases we see. When you start to grind the teeth they get even darker, so you have to use very opaque materials to block out the darkness. The result is opaque, white, dead-looking teeth. With no-prep veneers, even though the porcelain is very thin, we don’t have to use as much opaque, so we can build in natural characteristics.
